Andrea Figg will become a family and consumer sciences teacher and athletics coach after graduation. In her free time, Andrea enjoys going on walks with her puppy and hanging out with friends.

Andrea Figg transfers to Iowa State to keep creativity and athletics in her future

Teaching family and consumer sciences (FCS) has been Andrea Figg’s goal since she was in high school, because she always enjoyed her own FCS classes. She attended Scott Community College and transferred to Iowa State University as a sophomore.

“I knew I would get a really good education [at Iowa State],” Andrea said. “The [FCS] program here is the only one in Iowa, and number one in the nation.”

Andrea’s transition was simplified with the help of her Iowa State adviser. Andrea started her transferring process spring semester of freshman year and arrived at Iowa State to begin her sophomore year. She came to campus three times to visit with her adviser to plan her future Iowa State classes, as well as the remaining classes to take at community college. Andrea was eager to start her curriculum at Iowa State and get closer to her goal of becoming a teacher.

Along with teaching FCS, Andrea wants to coach sports for students in seventh grade through high school.

Andrea is working toward a coaching endorsement and taking classes to learn how to become a successful coach. In these courses, she utilizes her experience as a high school athlete to analyze her past coaches’ strengths and weaknesses while building her own coaching philosophy.

“I grew up always playing sports, and I’m hoping to give more back by coaching students,” she said.

Eventually, Andrea wants to attend graduate school for interior design and incorporate design principles in her FCS curriculum. She held an internship for Elements of Design in Bettendorf, Iowa, where she helped make drapes and upholstery for clients. Her favorite part was delving into the creative process to develop unique designs for clients. She is looking forward to teaching her students and encourage them to apply creativity in their own lives.
